Quchan

Quchan Rugs (also: Ghoochan) share designs with north-western Iranian, Caucasian and Afshar Kurdish Rugs which is odd because the city of Quchan in north-eastern Iran is a long way from Afshar, Kurdish and Caucasian areas. The history of the city goes back to Abbas Safavi (Shah Abbas the Great) who ruled Iran from 1588 to 1629. At the beginning of his reign Persia was in serious danger from the Ottoman Turks who had taken Tabriz and most of north-western Persia. Abbas Safavi Shah made a treaty with the Ottomans and Persia was forced to pay tribute, while on the eastern front the Uzbek came as far west as Mashad. Abbas used Kurds and Afshar to retake Mashad and gave those Afshar Turks and Kurdish mercenaries land in the Quchan area as a reward for their services and as a line of defence against the Uzbek and their Turkmen vassals to the north. The descendants of those Kurds and Afshar live in the Quchan area and produce the beautiful Quchan rugs.
